                                                                              Ann Eilbeck Mason
Ann Mason (b. 1734) grew up on a plantation in Charles County, Maryland. She married George Mason, a Virginia plantation owner and orchardist, when she was 16 years old. Not much is known about Ann but she must have had a very busy life. Typically, she would have directed the activities of the household slaves, provided clothing for the family and the slaves, managed the preservation of food, ensure the care and education of the children. She gave birth to 12 children. Eight children lived to adulthood. The Masons were close friends and neighbors of George and Martha Washington. This is Ann Mason’s wedding portrait, originally painted by John Hesselius.
