Dolley Madison
Dolley Madison (1768-1849) was born into a plain Quaker family in North Carolina. Her father was probably a planter but he freed his slaves and settled in Philadelphia (the heart of Quaker society) in 1783. When Dolley, already a widow with a son, married non-Quaker James Madison, the Quakers expelled her. But she found a new and exciting life with politician and founding father, James Madison. In fact, Dolley was soon known as one of the most gracious and charming hostesses in Washington. She was often the hostess for parties given by President Thomas Jefferson who was a widower. She brought prominence to dessert! Everyone loved Dolley Madison! But behind all of Dolleys lovely parties, there was a plan. She knew that if people got together, they would talk and laugh and enjoy each others company. Even political enemies might settle their differences. Dolley Madison held a special place in the hearts of all Americans. She was beloved all of her life. She provided substance to the role of the presidents wife. She was Americas first First Lady.
