                                                                                 Martha Jefferson
Martha Wayles Skelton Jefferson (1748-1782) grew up on a large Virginia Plantation. She was well-accomplished and was probably tutored in literature, poetry, French, bible study and music at home. When Martha was 23 years old, already a widow with one son, she married Thomas Jefferson. Martha managed their plantation life at Monticello. This included reading recipes to the slaves, managing the daily cooking and food preservation efforts, ensuring that the family and slaves had clothing, supervising the daily activities of the household slaves and hosting numerous parties and house guests. Martha and Thomas Jefferson had six children but only two lived beyond the age of three years. They were married for 13 years when Martha died from complications from childbirth. Thomas Jefferson was heart-broken. No facial images of Martha Jefferson have survived. This coloring page is based on the one silhouette that remains.
